Understanding Belgium

The recognition of the German-speaking part of the country as a linguistic area and autonomous community is a logical consequence of the overall development of Belgium from a unitary state to a federal state. Without a solution model for the Flemish-Walloon conflict, which repeatedly threatened Belgium's political cohesion and led to the transformation of the country, the pronounced autonomy of the German-speaking Community would have been unlikely.
